Advice if you are unwell after travel abroad
Malaria
Malaria is a very common illness in many parts of the world,
spread by mosquitoes that bite from dusk to dawn. It can be a
serious and sometimes fatal illness if not acted upon quickly.
Seek urgent medical attention if you
have any malaria symptoms
If you have any of the following malaria symptoms seven or more
days after arriving in a malaria risk area or within a year of your
return seek urgent medical attention and make sure the doctor is
aware that you have visited a risk area for malaria:
- Fever 38°C or above
- Flu-like symptoms
- Headache
- Diarrhoea
- Sweating and shivers
Travellers with the symptoms described above who have returned
from a malaria risk area may ring the Travel Clinic at the
Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine 08:30-15:00 hours Monday to
Friday for emergency tests and treatment (if necessary) this is an
appointment only service. This is an emergency NHS service and is
free. Outside of these hours seek immediate medical attention from
your own GP or go to the nearest Accident and Emergency
Department.
