Seafarer Medicals


You need an ENG 1 certificate if you are:

  • A seafarer
  • In charge of a ship
  • Serving on a merchant ship or yacht

The fee for an ENG 1 medical examination is £115.

An MCA (ENG1) Medical consists of the following:

  • Screening questionnaire
  • Physical examination by a Doctor
  • Urinalysis (routine urine test)
  • Weight, Height and Body Mass Index (BMI)
  • Near distance and colour vision test
  • Blood pressure and pulse
  • Audiometry (hearing test)

The medical will take around 40 minutes and you will need to bring the following to your examination:

  • Valid photographic ID (discharge book, passport or driving licence)
  • Your previous medical certificate if you have one
  • Your local doctor’s name, address and contact details
  • A list of any medication you’re taking
  • Any documents/forms/information from your employer relating to your medical
  • If you require a hearing test (every 10 years) it is essential you avoid exposure to loud noise for 16 hours prior to the test
  • Any information in relation to your health
  • List of previous vaccinations if travelling
  • Please do not wear contact lenses
  • Bring up to date prescription eyeglasses/contact lens with you to your appointment
  • Purchase order or letter of authority to invoice if company paying

    * FOR ENG1 ONLY - Your previous or due to expire ENG1 certificate (if appropriate). If you do not have it then you will need to contact the MCA for advice as without this, we cannot carry out a medical and you will still be charged.
